Gassiest Dog Breeds: Which Dogs Are Most Likely to Be Gassy?

December 30 2025

Dogs have many wonderful traits: they’re cute, cuddly, fun, adventurous, and smart, to name a few. However, they aren’t perfect. One of the few downsides of dog ownership is the fact that Man’s Best Friend is kinda gassy. If you’ve ever shared your home with a dog who can clear the room and kill houseplants with one fart, you know that dog flatulence can be more than just a minor annoyance. While occasional gas is normal, some dogs are well, a bit gassy. Fido may be farty due to his breed, body structure, digestive system, and eating habits. Understanding the causes of flatulence, which breeds are most prone, and how diet and lifestyle affect digestive health can help you keep your dog comfortable and your home fresher.

Here at Mountain Aire Veterinary Hospital, your Pine Mountain, CA vet clinic, also servingPine Mountain Club, Bakersfield, Lancaster, Lebec, and Castaic,  we have what may be the best thing in your fart-fighting toolbox. Fartbusters is a new treatment option we’ve recently launched and trademarked. As you can probably guess by the name, it’s aimed specifically at pups that are on the stinky side. A Pine Mountain vet explains further below.

What Causes Dog Flatulence?

It’s probably safe to say we all know what dog farts are. From a medical standpoint, flatulence occurs when gas builds up in the digestive tract and is expelled through the rectum. The gas is usually a byproduct of bacterial fermentation in the intestines caused by incomplete digestion.

Dogs can develop excessive gas for a variety of reasons, including swallowing air while eating or drinking, dietary indiscretion, low-quality or hard-to-digest diets, food sensitivities, or underlying gastrointestinal disorders.

Dogs who eat quickly or gulp water often swallow excess air, which contributes to gas. Table scraps, garbage, or high-fat human foods can upset digestion and lead to more flatulence. Low-quality commercial dog foods that contain fillers, artificial additives, or low-quality proteins are often harder for Fido to digest, so may produce more intestinal gas. Some dogs also develop sensitivities to certain ingredients like chicken, beef, soy, wheat, or dairy, which can trigger inflammation and chronic gas. Gastrointestinal disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis, or parasites can also cause persistent flatulence.

Fido’s menu also comes into play. Certain foods are more likely to increase gas production than others. Beans, peas, lentils, soy, and other high-fiber foods can increase fermentation in the gut. Dairy products, such as cheese, may cause issues in dogs with lactose intolerance, while fatty, greasy human foods, like that sausage pizza Fido is eyeballing, often lead to bloating and odor. Even healthy treats can trigger gas in dogs with sensitive stomachs. Broccoli, for instance, can be a culprit.

The Gassiest Dog Breeds

While any dog can develop gas, some breeds are naturally more prone due to their anatomy, digestive sensitivity, and eating habits.

Bulldogs

Bulldogs are affectionate and loyal, not to mention completely adorable. They are also known for their calm temperaments, which makes them popular family pets.

Bulldogs, particularly English Bulldogs, are infamous for flatulence. Originally bred in England for bull-baiting, Bulldogs have short, flat faces and compact airways. These features make them prone to swallowing air while eating, which can lead to gas. They also tend to have sensitive stomachs and slower digestion, which also contribute to bloating and foul-smelling flatulence.

Boxers

Boxers are energetic, muscular dogs originally bred in Munich, Germany for hunting and guarding. These dogs are playful, intelligent, loyal, and great with families, but their gas can be noticeable if not managed properly.

Boxers are known for their hearty appetites, which, combined with sensitive digestive tracts, makes them prone to gassy episodes. Boxers often eat quickly, gulping air and fermenting food in the gut, which increases flatulence.

German Shepherds

German Shepherds are highly intelligent and versatile dogs, originally bred in Germany for herding and protection work. Though they are strong and athletic, their digestive systems can be sensitive, and they are prone to gastrointestinal disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease and food sensitivities. These conditions can contribute to persistent flatulence. German Shepherds are known for their loyalty, courage, and work ethic, making them excellent working dogs and family companions.

Basset Hounds

The Basset Hound breed originated around 700 C.E. at the Abbey of St. Hubert, in the Ardennes region of France. Once a favorite of nobles, they were developed for tracking small game, a task their keen sense of smell made them well-suited for. The Basset Hound was even mentioned in Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream!

Basset Hounds are gentle, friendly, and patient, but their anatomy contributes to frequent flatulence. Their long bodies and deep chests can slow digestion, and their droopy faces often cause them to swallow air while eating.. Smaller, frequent meals and careful monitoring of diet can help reduce bloating and gas in this breed.

Chow Chows

Chow Chows are an ancient breed from China, originally used for hunting and guarding. Recognizable by their lion-like mane and distinctive blue-black tongues, Chow Chows are independent, dignified, and loyal. However, their owners should be aware of their dietary needs to reduce gassiness. Chow Chows have sensitive stomachs that may react poorly to grains or low-quality kibble. This digestive sensitivity often leads to chronic flatulence.

Labrador Retrievers

Labradors are friendly, outgoing dogs that are a joy to be around. Originally bred in Newfoundland for retrieving fish and assisting fishermen, they are very enthusiastic eaters. These guys often gulp their food quickly, which increases the likelihood of gas.

Labradors may also develop food sensitivities over time, which may also contribute to chronic flatulence. They are energetic, intelligent, and excellent family companions, but owners need to monitor their diet carefully to maintain digestive health.

How to Help Gassy Dogs

Dog owners can take several steps to manage and reduce flatulence. Feeding smaller, more frequent meals can improve digestion, while using slow-feed bowls reduces the amount of air swallowed during eating. Choosing high-quality, digestible dog food without fillers or artificial ingredients can also reduce intestinal gas. Monitoring for food sensitivities and avoiding common triggers such as beans, dairy, and fatty human foods is essential.

For dogs who continue to struggle with chronic gas, options like Fartbusters™ at Mountain Aire Veterinary Hospital provide veterinary-guided support. We will evaluate your canine buddy’s diet and digestive function, and screen for any underlying medical issues. Once Fido’s exam is complete, we can offer customized recommendations and therapies to restore gut balance.

Many dogs in Frazier Park and Pine Mountain Club are already benefitting from this comprehensive approach, which addresses the root causes of flatulence rather than simply masking symptoms.
